The Ajaokuta Industrial Park is set to host a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion plant, according to Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, the Minister of Steel Development.
This was announced during a meeting with the CEO of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGi), Engr. Michael Oluwagbemi. The CNG initiative, a key agenda of President Bola Tinubu, aims to reduce transportation costs by 40% following the removal of petrol subsidies.
Audu stated, “Mr. President has mandated a minimum of one million CNG vehicles on the road by 2027. The Ajaokuta Industrial Park will be pivotal in achieving this goal, with necessary resources like gas and engineering workshops already in place.”
Engr. Oluwagbemi emphasized the critical role of the steel industry in the CNG initiative, noting that establishing the CNG park in Ajaokuta will shift from importing to manufacturing components locally, addressing transportation challenges.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Chris Osa Isokpunwu, and the Sole Administrator of Ajaokuta Steel Company, Engr. Sumaila Abdul-Akaba, both expressed strong support for the initiative, underscoring its importance for Nigeria’s industrial and economic development.
