Dangote Petroleum Refinery has taken legal action against the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) and five oil companies, seeking to void their import licenses for petroleum products.
The refinery claims that its production of refined petroleum, including jet fuel and diesel, exceeds Nigeria’s daily consumption, making further imports unnecessary.
In the suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, Dangote Refinery also seeks N100 billion in damages against the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) for allegedly issuing import licenses that hurt its business. Dangote argues that the licenses violate the Petroleum Industry Act, which mandates local production should be prioritized.
The refinery’s legal team insists that NMDPRA’s actions have crippled Dangote’s business and urged the court to prevent further importation of products already in surplus locally.
The suit also seeks to prevent the imposition of additional levies on Dangote’s refinery, which operates in a Free Zone.
