Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has summoned the management of Dangote Refinery and Petrochemicals and the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to an emergency meeting over an alleged breach of a unionisation agreement.
The meeting, set for Friday afternoon in Abuja, will also involve the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and other stakeholders.
On September 9, Dangote and NUPENG signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the DSS headquarters granting workers the right to join unions of their choice.
But NUPENG accused Dangote of immediately violating the pact by allegedly ordering the removal of NUPENG stickers from trucks and replacing them with those of a new company-backed group, the Direct Trucking Company Drivers Association.
In a joint statement, NUPENG leaders said the move aims to weaken their Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch and monopolise the sector. Dangote denied the allegations, insisting union membership remains voluntary.
DSS is expected to mediate on the escalating row, which has sparked fears of fresh industrial unrest in the fuel supply chain.
