The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a decisive step to safeguard miners, mandating all mining companies to provide insurance coverage for their workers.
This policy change was announced by Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, during a condolence visit to Niger State following a tragic mining pit collapse in the Galkago community, Shiroro Local Government Area.
The collapse, which occurred last Monday, trapped at least 30 miners, complicating rescue efforts due to incessant rain and local insecurity.
Minister Alake emphasized that no new mining licenses would be approved without a comprehensive remediation plan and revised environmental impact assessments.
Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State echoed these sentiments, linking the region’s high insecurity to the presence of abundant mineral resources and calling for a census of licensed miners and stricter regulations on mining practices.
During his visit, the Minister also checked on the rescued victims at the IBB Specialist Hospital and met with traditional leaders. This incident highlights the urgent need for better safety measures and oversight in the mining sector to prevent future tragedies and ensure the welfare of mine workers.
