The National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has fined Fidelity Bank N555.8 million for violating customers’ data privacy.
The fine, issued after an investigation in April 2023, reflects the bank’s failure to comply with Nigeria’s Data Protection Regulation and the Nigeria Data Protection Act.
NDPC’s National Commissioner, Vincent Olatunji, stated that the bank’s lack of cooperation and arrogant stance during the investigation worsened the penalty.
The fine represents 0.1% of the bank’s annual gross revenue for 2023, making it the highest ever imposed by the NDPC.
This action underscores the commission’s determination to enforce data protection laws and ensure that organizations are held accountable for safeguarding customer data.
