The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has issued a stern 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding the immediate withdrawal of a newly proposed 5% tax on petroleum products.
The union described the levy as a “reckless act of economic wickedness,” arguing that it will further burden Nigerians already grappling with the high costs of fuel, food, and a devalued naira.
Despite the government’s explanation that the tax is intended to fund road infrastructure, TUC leaders Festus Osifo and Nuhu Toro, in a joint statement, insisted that citizens cannot be “sacrificial lambs” for the government’s policies.
They warned that if the government fails to comply, the union will mobilize a nationwide resistance, including a strike, to shut down key sectors.
The TUC has already put its affiliates on standby, calling on civil society groups, professional bodies, and all patriotic Nigerians to stand in solidarity in the fight for “economic justice.”
