A proposed maritime security law by the Senate has led to a disagreement between the Nigerian Navy and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
The bill aims to amend the NIMASA Act of 2007, empowering NIMASA to impose fines on maritime offenders without court proceedings.
NIMASA’s Director General, Dayo Mobereola, supports the bill, citing its alignment with international best practices.
However, Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, expressed concerns that the bill could create conflicts between NIMASA and the Navy, which is primarily responsible for maritime security.
Senator Wasiu Eshinlokun assured that the bill is not intended to infringe on the Navy’s duties but to enhance NIMASA’s effectiveness.
