National Power Grid Suffers First System Collapse of 2026

Nigeria’s electricity grid has recorded its first system collapse of 2026, with generation dropping sharply to about 20 megawatts on Friday afternoon.

Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that only the Omoku gas power plant remained operational, down from nearly 4,000 megawatts earlier in the day.

The incident comes less than three weeks after a partial grid collapse in December 2025, raising renewed concerns about grid stability.
