Vice President Kashim Shettima has called on Nigerian banks to ensure cash availability for citizens, citing public frustration over limited access to funds.
Represented by his economic adviser, Dr. Tope Fashua, at the 14th Bankers’ Committee Annual Retreat in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the need for urgent reforms to enhance financial inclusion.
Highlighting issues such as excessive charges by Point-of-Sale agents, he urged banks to address these challenges while expanding consumer credit opportunities and MSME financing.
He lauded Nigerian banks’ regional dominance and recent expansions, including branches in France, as evidence of their global capability. Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso also underscored the critical role of banking innovation in tackling national challenges like poverty and unemployment.
Cardoso encouraged deeper collaboration to reshape Nigeria’s financial landscape, emphasizing the importance of technology-driven solutions.
