At least 11 people were killed and more than 50 houses destroyed after violent clashes erupted between two communities in Nasarawa State, raising fresh concerns about the deteriorating security situation in the region.
The violence occurred on Friday in Akyawa and Udege Kasa communities, leaving residents displaced and properties reduced to ashes.
According to the Nigeria Police Force in Nasarawa State, the clashes resulted in the death of 11 persons while 52 houses were burnt—about 50 in Akyawa and two in Udege Kasa.
Police spokesperson SP Ramhan Nansel said the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Mohammed, had visited the affected communities and ordered a full investigation.
Security agencies, including the military and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), have also been deployed to restore calm.
However, conflicting reports from residents suggest the violence may not have been a communal clash but an invasion by armed bandits.
The attack follows an earlier assault in nearby Sabon Gida where homes and farm produce were destroyed.
For many locals, the incident highlights the government’s continuing struggle to effectively tackle rising insecurity across Nigeria’s rural communities.
