The Nigerian Economic Society (NES) has warned that Nigeria’s social welfare system is in an “ignominious state”, with 133 million citizens facing multidimensional poverty.
Speaking in Abuja ahead of the 66th NES Annual Conference, President Prof. Adeola Adenikinju said while recent reforms have improved macroeconomic stability, the benefits have not translated into better living conditions.
He noted that inflation eased slightly in July 2025, showing that sound fiscal and monetary policies can yield results. However, millions remain trapped in poverty due to poor access to health, education, and basic services.
“True growth is not GDP alone but dignity, opportunity, and access,” he said.
The NES urged government to broaden reforms, ensuring they deliver real gains for households and MSMEs, which account for nearly 40 million businesses nationwide.
Adenikinju stressed that inclusive policies in healthcare, education, and food systems are essential to restore dignity and reduce deprivation.
“Social inclusion is not optional. With 133 million Nigerians suffering deprivations, growth must be measured by lives improved, not just numbers on paper,” he said.
