Abia bans okada in Umuahia, Aba, Ohafia from June 22

The Abia State Government has banned commercial motorcycle operations in the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia, effective Monday, June 22.

Officials say the move is aimed at strengthening security and reducing crime, as okada riders have often been linked to robberies and kidnappings.

The ban is expected to affect thousands of riders and commuters who rely on motorcycles for daily transportation.

The government has promised to provide alternative transport options, but details remain sketchy. Critics argue the ban will worsen hardship for low-income earners who depend on okada for their livelihood.

The decision comes amid a nationwide debate over the regulation of commercial motorcycles, with several states imposing similar restrictions.
