Apapa Customs Seize N43.58bn Drugs, Expired Goods

Officers of Nigerian Custom

The Nigeria Customs Service, Apapa Command, has intercepted 13 containers loaded with drugs and expired goods valued at N43.58bn.

The seizure is one of the largest in recent months and highlights the scale of smuggling through Lagos ports.

Officials said the containers contained unregistered pharmaceuticals and expired food items that could have endangered public health.

The command has promised to prosecute those behind the illegal importation. But many Nigerians are asking how such huge consignments passed through multiple checkpoints before being caught.

The seizure raises fresh concerns about port security and the role of compromised officials. While the Customs deserves credit for the interception, the bigger question is whether the system is deliberately porous.

Cheap, expired, and fake drugs remain a major killer in Nigeria, often sold in open markets. The Apapa seizure is a warning that stronger border controls and honest enforcement are urgently needed to protect citizens.
