A Federal High Court in Lagos has struck out charges of illegal possession of firearm and ammunition against suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele. The charges were dropped due to lack of diligent prosecution.
The Federal Government had applied to withdraw the charges, which was supported by the Director of Public Prosecutions. However, Emefiele’s defense counsel argued that the government’s application should not be entertained as it was in disobedience of the court’s order to grant Emefiele bail.
Meanwhile, Emefiele’s scheduled arraignment on a fresh 20-count charge in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court was stalled due to the absence of one of the defendants. The case has been adjourned until August 23.
