The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has prohibited the sale and use of firecrackers and unauthorized pyrotechnics ahead of the ember-months festivities.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Miller G. Dantawaye, announced the directive during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, citing rising circulation of fireworks and associated security concerns.
Dantawaye said firecrackers pose significant risks, including injuries, fire outbreaks, and unnecessary panic across communities. Beyond physical hazards, he noted that the explosive noise often provides cover for criminal activities, particularly in high-risk areas.
He added that indiscriminate use of fireworks disrupts public peace and endangers vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with health conditions.
The command, he said, has mobilized officers to enforce the ban, with clear instructions to arrest and prosecute violators.
