President Bola Tinubu on Thursday launched a training programme for 5,000 young Nigerians to become electricity meter installers, aiming to tackle the country’s metering gap and boost job creation.
Speaking at the event in Abuja, Tinubu said the initiative aligns with his administration’s commitment to improving power supply and ensuring transparent billing.
The trainees will be deployed across the 11 electricity distribution companies after certification.
The Metering Gap Committee has previously estimated that over seven million households remain unmetered, leaving them vulnerable to estimated billing.
While stakeholders praised the move, they urged the government to address transmission and distribution challenges that continue to plague the sector.
The programme is expected to be completed within six months, with participants receiving stipends during training.
