Many Lagos residents are grappling with severe losses after days of torrential rainfall triggered widespread flooding across several communities, damaging homes, businesses and livelihoods.
Residents in Lekki, Ajiran, Ikotun and Ebute Metta recounted how floodwaters submerged properties, displaced families and destroyed valuable assets.
A poultry farmer in Lekki Scheme II said floodwaters wiped out a significant portion of his poultry business, killing chicks and leaving him stranded indoors for days. Other residents reported losing household appliances, food supplies and personal belongings.
Traders also suffered major setbacks. At Ikotun Market, several business owners said floodwaters destroyed goods worth hundreds of thousands of naira, worsening financial pressures amid an already difficult economic climate.
Many residents blamed inadequate drainage infrastructure, blocked canals and uncontrolled urban development for the recurring disaster.
The latest flooding has renewed concerns about Lagos’ preparedness for extreme weather events despite years of government promises to improve drainage systems.
Environmental experts warn that without sustained investment in flood-control infrastructure and stricter enforcement of planning regulations, similar disasters will continue to occur.
For affected families, the immediate concern is survival, while many are still waiting for meaningful government intervention and relief assistance.
