The South-West leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students has warned that it may mobilise students for peaceful mass action if the Federal Government fails to urgently tackle the worsening electricity crisis disrupting campuses and student communities across Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference in Akure, Ondo State, the student body said persistent blackouts were hurting academic work, research, safety and the overall welfare of students.
The warning was contained in a statement signed by NANS South-West Zonal Coordinator, Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, popularly known as “BILLIONCODES”, and the Chairman of Chairmen of the Joint Campus Committee in the zone, Comrade Tiamiyu Ademola.
After consultations with JCC chairmen across the six South-West states, the association said it had passed a vote of no confidence in the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Power under Minister Adebayo Adelabu.
NANS urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently review the ministry’s performance and deliver practical solutions.
The student body also condemned rising police harassment, extortion and brutality against students, as well as the escalating cost of accommodation in university communities.
It called for student-friendly rent regulations, sanctions for erring officers and stronger protection of students’ rights across campuses.
