Nigeria’s electricity grid remained unstable in April 2026, with generation companies operating at only 31 per cent of their installed capacity, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission.
Average available generation stood at 4,286 megawatts out of a total installed capacity of 13,654 MW, NERC reported in its latest data. \The huge shortfall has continued to fuel persistent grid collapses and power supply disruptions across the country.
Industry analysts blame the poor performance on gas supply shortages, transmission constraints, and ageing infrastructure.
Despite repeated government promises to improve the sector, electricity generation has consistently fallen far below national demand.
The situation has forced many businesses and households to rely on expensive alternative power sources, worsening the cost of living.
Power sector stakeholders are calling for urgent investment in gas infrastructure and transmission upgrades.
NERC warned that without decisive intervention, grid instability will persist and undermine economic growth and industrial productivity.
