NiMet Warns of Thunderstorms Across States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of sunshine, cloudy conditions and thunderstorms across parts of the country from Saturday to Monday, warning residents to take precautions against severe weather conditions.

According to the agency, northern states are expected to experience largely sunny conditions with isolated thunderstorms, particularly in Taraba State during afternoon and evening periods. In the North Central region, cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine are expected throughout the forecast period.

For the South, NiMet predicted widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in states including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ebonyi and Anambra.

The agency cautioned that strong winds may accompany thunderstorms and advised the public to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall and disconnect electrical appliances during storms.

NiMet also warned that high temperatures would continue across many parts of the country, increasing the risk of heat-related discomfort. Residents were urged to remain hydrated and wear light clothing.

As weather-related disruptions become more frequent, concerns remain about Nigeria’s inadequate drainage systems and poor urban planning, which continue to worsen the impact of seasonal rains in many communities.
