The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reaffirmed that its planned nationwide protest against insecurity will hold on December 17, despite speculation of a possible suspension.
NLC President Joe Ajaero said the protest remains “sacrosanct” and aimed at compelling urgent government action.
Speaking in Gombe after meeting Governor Inuwa Yahaya, Ajaero said worsening insecurity is crippling the economy, discouraging investment and exposing workers to kidnappings and killings.
He cited cases of abducted workers and murdered teachers, stressing that ransom payments are pushing families into debt.
“The protest is to wake the government up,” he said, demanding decisive action against banditry and kidnapping.
Governor Yahaya, speaking at the commissioning of the NLC state secretariat, described workers as vital partners in governance.
He said Gombe prioritised labour welfare, noting that the state was among the first to implement the national minimum wage.
The governor added that sustained dialogue with organised labour had helped maintain industrial harmony, describing the new secretariat as a symbol of mutual respect and shared responsibility.
