Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to ensure transparency and fairness in its anti-corruption campaign, following the arrest of former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal over alleged ₦189bn fraudulent withdrawals.
In a statement on X, Obi described Tambuwal’s arrest as exposing contradictions in Nigeria’s graft fight. He warned against targeting political opponents while shielding allies, stressing that only sincere leadership can defeat corruption.
“I look forward to a time when one law applies to all, regardless of political alignment,” Obi said, urging EFCC operatives to act with conscience and adhere to evidence-based investigations.
He noted that public trust hinges on consistent application of justice, not arbitrary selection driven by political convenience.
According to Obi, the anti-graft war will only succeed if the rules are even, and agencies avoid bias.
He reiterated his call for leaders to demonstrate genuine commitment, saying corruption can only be curbed under a system where every Nigerian is treated equally before the law.
