Activist Omoyele Sowore has accused Nigerian police officers of arresting Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and lawyer Aloy Ejimakor during a protest in Abuja demanding Kanu’s release.
Sowore, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said the officers “brutalised and arrested” the duo along with several bystanders before whisking them to the FCT Command.
Witnesses said the police fired teargas and live bullets to disperse protesters near the Central Business District, causing panic and heavy traffic disruptions.
Major routes, including Shehu Shagari Way and Eagle Square, were cordoned off as part of the security clampdown.
Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin cited a court order restricting protests around key government areas, including Aso Rock, the National Assembly, and the Court of Appeal.
Despite the ban, pro-Biafra activists have continued to call for Kanu’s unconditional release. The IPOB leader remains in DSS custody facing terrorism-related charges.
Human rights groups have condemned the police action, describing it as an infringement on citizens’ freedom of assembly.
