Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has renewed the ban on alcoholic beverages in Maiduguri and accused some serving and former security personnel of fueling crime.
During Tuesday’s inauguration of a committee to revoke illegal hotels, brothels, shanties and curb antisocial vices, Zulum said dismissed and active military and police officers have been implicated in radicalism, prostitution and drug abuse, worsening terrorism threats.
“I’m glad to see officers from the military, police, NSCDC and CJTF here,” he remarked. “Many criminal acts are committed by security personnel—both serving and retired—and civilians they influence.”
The reconstituted committee, now including all security agencies, aims to dismantle criminal hideouts and tackle cult clashes, thuggery and theft—incidents linked to alcohol consumption and radicalisation.
Zulum described the strengthened ban on alcohol sale and consumption as a key tool to stem rising cult violence, drug abuse and loss of lives.
He pledged rigorous enforcement, including revocation of licences for violators, and urged residents to support the crackdown. “We must restore safety and order in Maiduguri,” he said, promising that the multi-agency committee will coordinate a comprehensive response.
