At least 100 pupils and staff abducted from St. Mary Catholic School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State, have reportedly been released, raising cautious optimism among families and church authorities.
The victims were among 315 persons abducted during the attack on the school, with about 50 escaping within 24 hours, leaving 265 in captivity.
Sources in Borgu Local Government Area confirmed that buses marked “Office of the National Security Adviser” were seen conveying the rescued children toward Wawa.
Reacting to the development, the Catholic Church expressed hope but said it was yet to receive official confirmation. The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kontagora, Bishop Bulus Yohanna, said the news would bring great joy if confirmed.
“We are praying and waiting for their return. If this is true, it is cheering news,” he said, adding that the diocese hopes the remaining abductees will be freed soon.
The Niger State Police Command neither confirmed nor denied the release, while the state government said an official update would be provided when consultations were concluded.
Earlier, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu had reassured parents that the abducted pupils were safe and would return soon.
