The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has revealed that 8,246 inmates in its custody are battling mental health issues.
Assistant Controller General of Corrections for Medical Services, Dr. Glory Essien, disclosed the figure during a public hearing in Abuja.
She explained that the trauma of sudden incarceration often triggers psychological distress, with some inmates exhibiting disturbed behaviour almost immediately.
Due to limited staff, the NCoS relies on trained inmate leaders to identify and report cases early.
Essien noted that mental healthcare in correctional centres faces chronic challenges: inadequate drugs, understaffing, and poor logistics. She emphasised that mental illness requires long-term treatment, unlike short-term ailments.
On his part, ACG Mohammed Bashir said the government was committed to inmates’ welfare but funding was insufficient, revealing that sanitary pads alone cost over ₦4m monthly.
He added that a dedicated psychological services unit works with consultants visiting 12 major centres.
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, appealed to medical associations and private firms for urgent support, urging equitable distribution of mental health professionals nationwide.
