Pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere has asked the Federal Government to suspend implementation of the 2026 Tax Reform Act, scheduled to begin January 1, 2026, warning that the legislation raises serious concerns about content integrity, economic sovereignty, and national security.
In a statement signed by leader Oba Oladipo Olaitan and spokesperson Prince Justice Faloye, the group said the gazetted version of the Act allegedly differs from what the National Assembly passed — a claim earlier raised by Rep.
Abdulsammad Dasuki. Afenifere demanded an independent audit and insisted that any proven constitutional breach must attract sanctions.
The group also criticised alleged outsourcing of Nigeria’s tax administration functions to foreign firms through the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), saying it threatens data security and could expose the nation to economic manipulation. It described such outsourcing as “economic recolonisation” that undermines the principles of fiscal independence fought for before Nigeria’s political independence.
Afenifere further decried poor revenue performance in 2025 and rising public debt, saying deficit-driven governance has not improved citizens’ welfare. It called for a national economic audit, stronger local content, and investment in social welfare programmes.
