The Afenifere group, a prominent Yoruba socio-cultural organization, has openly criticized President Bola Tinubu over what it terms “Yoruba-biased” federal appointments, alleging a preference for Yoruba leaders in key positions across the justice, economic, and security sectors.
In a statement released by Ayo Adebanjo and Justice Faleye, the organization’s leaders warned that these actions might fracture Nigeria’s inter-ethnic harmony, urging Tinubu to reconsider and ensure a more inclusive federal representation.
Highlighting their concerns, Afenifere pointed out appointments to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Directorate of State Security (DSS), and key ministries as examples of “overwhelming Yoruba dominance.”
The group further noted that their legacy as advocates for equity and unity wouldn’t support any form of ethnic dominance. They drew parallels to previous criticisms of northern favoritism, emphasizing their commitment to Nigeria’s diversity.
The Presidency, however, refuted these claims, detailing appointee distributions by region, with Special Adviser Sunday Dare stating that facts demonstrate Tinubu’s administration is inclusive of all regions, not solely the Yoruba.
