Former Minister of Transportation and presidential hopeful, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged supporters of the African Democratic Congress in Rivers State to register massively despite violent attacks on the party’s secretariat and his convoy in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area.
Amaechi made the appeal shortly after launching the ADC membership registration exercise in the state, hours after suspected hoodlums reportedly set the party’s secretariat ablaze and opened fire near his family house in Ubima.
His convoy was also attacked, but security operatives accompanying him were said to have repelled the assailants after an exchange of gunfire.
Addressing party supporters after his own registration, Amaechi condemned the attacks but appealed for calm, warning members against retaliation.
He said the violence was meant to distract the movement, but would not stop the party from organising in local communities.
He also commended the police, DSS and NSCDC for what he described as their swift and professional response after he contacted them, while urging authorities to ensure that those behind the attacks are arrested and prosecuted.
Amaechi insisted that the ADC in Rivers must build its numbers and prepare to shock opponents at the polls.
