A 32-year-old female banker, Amarachi Ugochukwu, was found dead in the staff toilet of Globus bank, Ikorodu branch, Lagos, on Monday, January 8, 2024.
According to sources, she had left her phone on her desk and it kept ringing, which aroused the curiosity of her colleagues. They tried to locate her and discovered that the toilet door was locked from inside. They broke the door open and found her lifeless body with an empty bottle of SNIPPER, a pesticide, and a diary beside her.
The diary contained a heartbreaking note, in which she expressed her frustration and despair over her low performance at work, her mental stress, the harsh economic situation, and her bleak future. She also apologized to her family and friends, and asked God for mercy.
The police have been notified and are investigating the incident. The management of Globus bank has not issued any official statement on the matter.
The tragic death of Amarachi Ugochukwu has sparked a public outcry over the rising cases of suicide among Nigerians, especially young professionals, who are facing enormous pressure and challenges in their careers and personal lives.
