In an extraordinary summit, ECOWAS leaders emphasized their commitment to African sovereignty and unity while urging respect for member states’ independence. They praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership but clarified that political sanctions remain, while border and commercial sanctions were lifted.
Guinea’s sanctions were also lifted, with all four countries invited to future ECOWAS meetings.
However, the planned withdrawal of three countries could lead to economic losses, including halting ECOWAS projects worth over $500 million and affecting regional initiatives like the West African Power Pool project.
Additionally, citizens of these countries employed by ECOWAS face job losses, and regional offices may shut down.
