Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has been arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport while en route to a Trade Union Congress conference in the UK.
The NLC condemned the arrest as an attack on Nigerian workers and demanded Ajaero’s immediate release.
Ajaero’s detention follows his interrogation over terrorism financing and cybercrime allegations. The police recently accused him of conspiring with a Briton, Andrew Wynne, to fund protests against President Tinubu’s administration.
Despite these claims, the NLC maintains that Ajaero’s arrest is politically motivated and part of a broader attempt to silence labor unions.
The Congress is preparing further action, calling for national and international solidarity to resist the government’s intimidation tactics.
