The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured that the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State will reflect the people’s choice.
INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu made this commitment during a stakeholders’ meeting in Benin City on Friday.
At the meeting, which included political party leaders and heads of security agencies, Yakubu dismissed calls to extend the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) period, noting that young people, primarily students, are actively registering.
Yakubu emphasized INEC’s use of technology, such as the BIVAS system, to ensure credible elections, stating, “We have 98 percent successful accreditation with BIVAS, ensuring eligible voters are not disenfranchised.”
Despite tensions within the Labour Party, where two individuals claimed the chairmanship, Yakubu called for peaceful conduct, condemning recent shootings at CVR centers in Oredo ward 4, Egor, and other areas. He stressed that “the people have the right to decide who governs them.”
Resident Electoral Commissioner Dr. Anugbum Onuoha highlighted the importance of the meeting in addressing security issues affecting the election process.
