Teachers in Anambra State have kicked against the Federal Government’s proposal to scrap the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for education courses, warning it would lower professional standards.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Anambra chapter described the plan as a dangerous step that would produce unqualified educators.
In a statement, the union argued that removing the entrance exam would devalue the teaching profession and further degrade the quality of education.
The government had argued that the reform would increase enrolment in education programmes, but critics see it as a shortcut. Many teachers believe the real issue is poor funding and inadequate training facilities.
The rejection adds to widespread opposition from education stakeholders. With Nigeria already facing a crisis of out-of-school children and poor learning outcomes, many say now is not the time to lower standards but to invest in teacher training and infrastructure.
