The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised an alarm over the dismissal of over 400 of its members by various university managements across the country. Dr. Dele Ashiru, the immediate past Chairman of ASUU’s University of Lagos chapter, revealed this disturbing trend during a Leadership Training Workshop held at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye.
Ashiru highlighted that the intimidation and persecution were particularly rampant in state-owned institutions, where governors, acting as visitors to these universities, show little tolerance for opposing views and policies. He emphasized that ASUU would continue to stand against such persecution and fight for the genuine interests of its members.
In a related development, ASUU has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and prevent another round of strikes in Nigerian universities. The union’s Lagos Zone Coordinator, Professor Adelaja Odukoya, urged the government to sign and implement the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement, which was concluded in 2021 but has yet to be implemented.
The union warned that the deliberate refusal to sign and implement the agreement violates collective bargaining principles and could lead to another industrial crisis in public universities. ASUU remains committed to improving the fortune of Nigerian universities and calls for immediate action from the Tinubu-led government to address these pressing issues.
