The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened nationwide strike action unless the Federal Government fulfills outstanding commitments under the 2009 FG-ASUU agreement.
In Abuja on Friday, ASUU President Chris Piwuna issued a stern warning that nine critical issues remain unresolved, including renegotiation of terms since 2017 and unpaid 2022 strike salaries linked to IPPIS payroll.
Piwuna criticized the delayed release of N150 billion in revitalization funds and arrears of earned academic allowances.
He also voiced alarm over the non-implementation of promised adjustments to irregular allowances by 2026 and the marginalization of ASUU members at state universities.
Political interference, he said, compromises university autonomy, citing recent leadership appointments at Nnamdi Azikiwe and Federal University Abuja.
Calling for a national education summit on funding, governance, and staff welfare, Piwuna argued that robust universities are essential for national transformation.
He pledged ASUU’s openness to dialogue but warned that further delays would compel the union to protect its members’ rights, underscoring that “without quality education, development is impossible.”
