The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Nigerian Federal Government, demanding urgent action on unresolved issues affecting university lecturers. This ultimatum follows an earlier 21-day notice that expired without resolution.
ASUU’s key demands include renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement based on the Nimi Briggs Committee’s Draft Agreement, payment of withheld salaries, and adequate funding for public universities.
Additionally, the union is advocating for the implementation of reports from visitation panels and the reversal of illegal council dissolutions.
President Emmanuel Osodeke expressed frustration over the government’s inaction, warning that prolonged delays could worsen the crisis in Nigeria’s public university system.
He stated that if the government fails to act within the new timeframe, ASUU may initiate an indefinite industrial action, beginning on September 23, 2024.
