At a two-day workshop in northern Nigeria, education experts and community leaders highlighted a dire educational gap in the region—northern Nigeria is home to 22% of the world’s 50 million out-of-school children.
Convened by Dr. Fola Aina from SOAS in collaboration with Ahmadu Bello University, the workshop, themed “Empowering Locals through Technological Innovation in Educationally Disadvantaged Communities in Northern Nigeria,” focused on bridging this gap.
Dr. Aina noted that factors such as insecurity, poverty, and geographical isolation contribute significantly to the educational crisis in the region.
Participants explored innovative technological solutions that could deliver quality education to children unable to attend traditional schools, especially in conflict-affected areas.
Emphasizing the crucial role of government policy and community engagement, speakers called for increased collaboration among stakeholders to implement sustainable educational initiatives.
They stressed that addressing these challenges is essential for Nigeria’s future development and for providing millions of disadvantaged children the opportunity to learn and thrive.
