Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have vowed not to call off their strike until they receive their salary arrears and entitlements.
The strike, which began in March, was triggered by the non-payment of backlogs and the failure to implement the new ₦70,000 minimum wage.
During a meeting with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike on Thursday, the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) maintained its stance, stressing that no teacher will return to class until bank alerts are received.
Chairman of the FCT NUT, Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas, reaffirmed the union’s position after a State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting.
He acknowledged the minister’s effort, including withholding 10% of internally generated revenue from the six Area Councils for six months and forming a committee to address the teachers’ grievances.
Despite signing three separate agreements with council chairmen, the teachers said those agreements were ignored. “Even if alerts drop this evening, we will resume tomorrow,” Shafas said, emphasizing the teachers’ readiness once payments are confirmed.
