Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have resumed their indefinite strike effective March 24, 2025, protesting the non-payment of the newly promised N70,000 minimum wage.
Under the banner of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), educators claim that their February salaries were disbursed without the mandated wage adjustment, leaving them unable to meet basic living expenses.
The strike, confirmed in a communique following an emergency meeting of the State Wing Standing Committee in Gwagwalada, criticizes the area council chairmen for their blatant disregard of prior agreements.
Union leaders decry the payment process as “disturbing and lacking in empathy,” arguing that the continuous undermining of negotiated wage increases deepens the financial hardship faced by teachers and their families.
Their demands include immediate implementation of the new wage in future salary disbursements, payment of arrears, and additional allowances.
The resumption of the strike has prompted parents to keep their children at home, highlighting the broader impact on the education system.
Critics contend that this recurring issue reflects systemic neglect within the FCT education sector, necessitating urgent government intervention to secure fair compensation and improve working conditions for teachers.
