The Federal Government has completed a major overhaul of Nigeria’s basic, secondary, and technical education curricula to reduce overload and make learners “future-ready.”
Education Minister Dr. Maruf Alausa, represented by Minister of State Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, unveiled the framework in Abuja.
The review was carried out with the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, UBEC, and other key stakeholders.
Under the new structure, primary pupils will take between 9 and 12 subjects, junior secondary students 12–14, and senior secondary 8–9. Technical schools will offer 9–11.
Officials said the aim was not only to cut the number of subjects but to improve content depth and relevance, equipping students with skills to thrive in today’s global economy.
“The revised curricula will reduce content overload and create more time for deeper learning,” Prof. Ahmad explained.
Implementation will be phased nationwide, with strict monitoring to ensure smooth adoption. The government said the changes reflect a commitment to quality, practical, and globally relevant education.
