In a sweeping security intervention, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has deployed **1,600 newly recruited watchmen** to strengthen protection across secondary schools.
The move follows the attack in Kebbi State where gunmen killed a school vice principal and abducted 25 students, sparking widespread concern across the northern region.
Presenting appointment letters to the guards and 400 newly recruited mathematics teachers, Governor Yusuf said securing school environments is now a top priority.
He explained that learning cannot thrive where students and teachers feel unsafe, stressing that the deployment marks a major step toward restoring discipline and stability in public schools.
According to the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the watchmen will work round-the-clock to detect suspicious movement, protect school facilities, and support early-warning systems.
Governor Yusuf urged the guards to exhibit vigilance, integrity, and discipline in carrying out their duties.
The state government says the initiative is part of a broader strategy to prevent school-based abductions and the infiltration of criminal gangs into learning centres.
