The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has given FCT Minister Nyesom Wike a seven-day ultimatum to reopen public primary schools in Abuja, which have been shuttered for over two months.
In a statement signed by NANS President Comrade Olushola Oladoja, the student body decried the prolonged denial of basic education for thousands of disadvantaged children while private institutions continue unhindered.
NANS revealed it has sent multiple formal letters to Minister Wike seeking an urgent meeting to resolve disputes between the FCT Administration and Local Government Education Authorities that precipitated the closures—none of which have been acknowledged. “This injustice speaks volumes about government insensitivity to the plight of the common man,” Oladoja said.
Should the schools remain closed after the seven-day window, NANS warns it will mobilize nationwide protests and shut down the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).
“The future of Nigerian children cannot be sacrificed on the altar of administrative irresponsibility,” the statement concluded, stressing that the right to basic education is non-negotiable and any further inaction will be met with legitimate resistance.
