The Federal Government has granted universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education autonomy from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
The exemption allows these institutions to handle staff payments independently. The move aims to enhance efficiency in the administration of tertiary institutions, giving them the freedom to manage their affairs more effectively.
The decision comes after concerns were raised about the centralization of payroll systems limiting institutional autonomy. The exemption addresses long-standing demands from university staff unions, such as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which argued that IPPIS eroded university autonomy.
