Students of the University of Abuja have staged a protest at the institution’s main gate, vehemently opposing the proposed renaming of the university after Yakubu Gowon.
Carrying placards with messages like “We stand for UniAbuja” and “Solve hunger problems, not renaming UniAbuja,” the students urged the federal government to reverse the decision.
The Students Union Government (SUG) emphasized the negative psychological impact the name change would have on students and appealed to President Tinubu to maintain the status quo.
An alumnus and Public Administration professor, Jeremiah Vambe, echoed the students’ concerns, highlighting the potential economic, legal, and psychological ramifications of the change.
The Abuja Indigenous Students Association (AISA) further argued that renaming UniAbuja would undermine the university’s history and the identity of the Abuja natives. They proposed renaming the abandoned University of Science & Technology in Abaji after Ladi Kwali instead.
