Unions Halt Resumption In Federal Unity Colleges Nationwide

Students of Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria will not resume for the first term until further notice, following a directive by the Joint Congress of Unions of the Federal Ministry of Education.

The unions announced the decision in a communiqué issued on Thursday, saying the action was in protest over unresolved welfare and policy issues.

The development means thousands of students and parents must adjust their plans, with many families already struggling with transport and school fees.

The Federal Unity Colleges are among the few affordable boarding schools for middle-class Nigerians, so the shutdown will hit hard.

Parents are worried that another prolonged closure could disrupt the academic calendar and expose children to social vices.

The unions insist they are open to dialogue, but government has yet to respond publicly. Education watchers say the standoff reflects a deeper neglect of teachers’ welfare and school infrastructure.

Until both sides return to the negotiating table, classrooms will remain shut and students will bear the brunt.
