Academic staff at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have downed tools indefinitely, protesting the non-payment of their full August salaries.
The lecturers, under the umbrella of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, say the management has failed to remit complete wages, leaving many workers in financial distress.
ASUU-UNIZIK leadership insists the strike will persist until the university authorities pay every kobo owed. They have also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure that federal universities respect the terms of employment and existing agreements.
The development has thrown academic activities into uncertainty, with students uncertain about when lectures will resume.
This latest industrial action underscores the recurring funding crisis in Nigeria’s public university system, where staff often go for months without pay.
Many lecturers say the situation has become unbearable, forcing some to seek alternative means of livelihood.
The union warns that unless the government addresses the root causes of underfunding, the education sector will continue to face disruptions.
Students are now left in the lurch, with examinations and academic calendars hanging in the balance.
