The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has frozen statutory allocations meant for local governments in Osun State, a move the African Democratic Congress has branded as political terrorism.
The party accused the Federal Government of using the anti-graft agency to destabilise the state ahead of its August 15 governorship election.
In a statement, the ADC said the freezing of funds is a deliberate attempt to cripple the state government and create an impression of financial recklessness.
The party alleged that the EFCC is being deployed to favour the All Progressives Congress in the upcoming poll.
The Accord Party also waded into the matter, accusing the EFCC of freezing Osun’s accounts to influence the election in favour of the APC.
Both parties have called on the commission to unfreeze the funds and allow the state to function.
The EFCC has yet to respond to the allegations, but the development has heightened political tension in the state.
Osun residents are worried that the move could affect the payment of salaries and the delivery of basic services.
This is not the first time the EFCC has frozen state funds, but the timing, so close to an election, has raised eyebrows.
