The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has revealed that frequent national grid collapses are due to substandard materials supplied by corrupt contractors in the power sector.
Chairman Ola Olukoyede, addressing the House Committee on Anti-Corruption, lamented that less than 20% of capital projects have been executed over the past two decades, hindering infrastructural progress.
Investigations showed contractors opted for lower-quality materials, causing repeated failures and outages. With Nigeria experiencing 10 grid collapses this year, including recent incidents affecting 17 northern states, Olukoyede highlighted the need for improved oversight and enforcement.
He called for collaboration with the National Assembly to increase project execution to at least 50% annually. The EFCC committed to intensifying efforts to prevent malpractice and ensure capital projects align with standards to foster national development and stable infrastructure.
