Eight security operatives were killed when bandits ambushed a joint patrol team along the Gusau–Funtua Road in Zamfara State on Thursday.
The state governor’s spokesperson, **Suleiman Idris Gusau**, confirmed the attack, describing it as a tragic but temporary setback.
He vowed that the government and security agencies remain resolute in their campaign to eliminate banditry in the state.
“Yes, eight gallant officers lost their lives,” Gusau said. “But this will not slow our progress toward restoring peace.”
Witnesses reported heavy gunfire in Tsafe and Maru Local Government Areas as troops battled the assailants. Reinforcements were later deployed to prevent further attacks and pursue the fleeing bandits.
The assault comes amid intensified military operations across Zamfara and neighbouring states, targeting known terrorist camps.
Despite recurring violence, the state government maintains that coordinated efforts involving the military, police, and vigilantes have led to major breakthroughs, including the rescue of abducted victims and the neutralization of armed groups.
Authorities say the fight against banditry will continue “without compromise or hesitation.”
